Resveratrol reduces heart disease by altering gut microbiome

Resveratrol, a compound found in red wine, reduces the risk of heart disease by changing the gut microbiome, according to a new study by researchers from China. "Our results offer new insights into the mechanisms responsible for resveratrol's anti-atherosclerosis effects and indicate that gut microbiota may become an interesting target for pharmacological or dietary interventions to decrease the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases," said Man-tian Mi, PhD, principal investigator of the study and a researcher at the Research Center for Nutrition and Food Safety, Institute of Military Preventive Medicine, Third Military Medical University, Chongqing, China.
