Red wine can improve cardiovascular health of people with type 2 diabetes

Drinking a glass of red wine every day as part of a healthy diet can help patients with well-controlled type 2 diabetes improve cardiac health and manage cholesterol, according to an article published in Annals of Internal Medicine. The two-year CArdiovaSCulAr Diabetes and Ethanol (CASCADE) randomised controlled intervention trial was performed on 224 controlled diabetes patients (aged 45 to 75), who generally abstained from alcohol. They were randomised into three equal groups according to whether they consumed a five-ounce serving (150ml) of mineral water, white wine or red wine with dinner every night for two years and encouraged to follow a Mediterranean diet without caloric restriction.
