New research leaves some unanswered questions for aged garlic extract and hypertension

Clinical trial results have shown aged garlic extract to be effective for hypertension in a study carried out in Adelaide between August 2011 and March 2012.  The trial, published recently in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition [1] concluded that aged garlic extract may be considered as a safe additional treatment to conventional antihypertensive therapy. Led by Dr Karin Ried at the University of Adelaide, the study examined the effect, dose response, tolerability and acceptability of different doses of aged garlic extract as an additional treatment to existing antihypertensive medication in patients with uncontrolled hypertension over a 12 week trial period.
