Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a chronic functional gastrointestinal disorder which can significantly impact quality of life.1 With symptoms of abdominal cramping, altered bowel motions, bloating and flatulence, IBS is often frustrating and debilitating.2 Approximately 1 in 5 Australians experience symptoms of IBS at some time3 , and around 1 in 10 people globally are impacted by the condition.4 Whilst IBS occurs in all age groups, symptoms tend to first occur in early adulthood, more commonly impacting women than men. There is also a clear association between IBS and other disorders, such as inflammatory bowel disease, fibromyalgia and depression.5
