Low vit b12 in obese teenagers with insulin sensitivity of concern

Nearly a third of obese teens with clinical insulin resistance have low or borderline serum vitamin B12 status, and are susceptible to a further decrease in concentrations if metformin therapy is commenced, an Australian study shows. The authors warn their finding is of particular concern because “emerging evidence indicates an association between obesity, metformin use and reduced vitamin B12 status, which can have serious hematologic, neurologic and psychiatric consequences.”
