Keeping kids healthy pharmacist seminar

The Blackmores Institute is hosting a series of face-to-face Pharmacist Education dinner events throughout October and November 2017. These three events will provide an opportunity for pharmacists to explore nutritional and lifestyle strategies to manage a range of common childhood conditions in pharmacy practice. The clinically focused evenings will be hosted and delivered by the Blackmores Institutes’ Dr Lesley Braun, along with specialist paediatrician Dr Deb Levy, followed by a category overview presented by Blackmores. “This is an ideal opportunity to explore integrative nutritional and lifestyle strategies in the management of common childhood conditions in pharmacy practice,” Dr Braun explains. “Health professionals have an important role to play in the community. This seminar series will deliver category insights, professional practice points and research updates.” Dr Lesley Braun will present an overview of key micronutrients required for normal childhood growth and development along with common signs and symptoms of deficiency/insufficiency. The discussion will cover omega 3 fatty acids, iodine, zinc, calcium, vitamin D and vitamin A, and the biochemical and physiological effects of these nutrients in the body and levels of deficiency seen in Australia. Take away practice points will include guidelines on adequate intake levels and relevant food sources. Dr Levy will cover common conditions seen in pharmacy, including coughs and colds, gut issues, growth and development, behaviour, sleep and fussy eaters. She will share a simple three-level approach that can be applied to any presenting complaint for children in order to determine the seriousness and expose underlying conditions. A case study approach will be used to illustrate steps pharmacists can take to offer an integrative and holistic approach to supporting kid’s health. Pharmacists are encouraged to register for this event by signing into the Blackmores Institute at www.blackmoresinstitute.org, or following this link.
