Iodine supplements should be taken during pregnancy despite mandatory fortification

Mandatory iodisation of table salt in Turkey has lowered iodine deficiency in schoolchildren but pregnant women still require a boost from supplements, researchers say. The researchers screened almost 900 pregnant women (mean age 28 years) from Trabzon an area in Turkey that was formerly classed as “severely iodine deficient” for use of iodised salt.
