Musculoskeletal conditions are responsible for 13% of total disease burden in Australia1, costing an estimated $14 billion in 2018.2 Arthritis is responsible for the majority of these figures, and prevalence of the condition is increasing, expected to rise from 3.6 million to 5.4 million people by 2030.3 Including a wide range of inflammatory conditions that affect the bones, muscles and joints, arthritis is a key contributor to chronic pain, often resulting in pain, stiffness, swelling and redness in affected joints.4 Although it is not an inevitable consequence of ageing, older age significantly increases the risk of developing arthritis, with 73% of people living with osteoarthritis older than 55 years.5
