Liver injury and supplements link not relevant to australian market

Australian consumers should not be alarmed by a recent US study suggesting supplements increase liver injury, according to Blackmores Institute Director Dr Lesley Braun. "It’s important to realise that this is a US-based study, looking at US products. The quality control climate in the US is very different to Australian control climate," she advised. "As a result, this research cannot be applied to Australian products due to our more rigorous regulatory environment which makes the likelihood of contamination or adulteration a lot less likely," Dr Braun said. Published in the journal Hepatology, the study suggested that liver injury caused by certain supplements increased from 7% to 20% over a ten year period in a group of 839 individuals with liver injury.
