Hip fracture patients in long term care not getting adequate osteoporosis therapy

Nearly half of all elderly patients at high risk of repeat hip fractures are not getting adequate treatment for osteoporosis, including vitamin D supplementation, delegates at the World Congress on Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis and Musculoskeletal Diseases, heard this week. Presenting the data, Dr. George Ioannidis, researcher at the GERAS Centre and McMaster University and co-author of the study stated: "Our study shows that there is a significant treatment gap in all categories of high risk patients, all of whom have suffered a previous fracture or are at high-risk due to glucocorticoids or a diagnosis of osteoporosis.
