Age-Related Macular Degeneration – Nutritional Interventions are important

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of severe vision impairment in individuals aged over 55 years in Australia1,2 and a leading cause of irreversible blindness among the elderly population in the Western world3. AMD is the name given to a group of chronic degenerative retinal eye diseases that cause progressive loss of central vision, leaving the peripheral or side vision intact4. It affects the ability to read, drive, recognise faces and perform activities that require detailed vision which can have a significant impact on people’s ability to live independently4. While AMD is usually related to aging, it is not a normal consequence of aging4.
